Two Basic Kinds of Lead-Acid Battery: Those Meant for Starting Vehicles and Those Meant for Deep Cycling

Batteries don’t just differ in terms of their voltage, energy capacity, and other electrical ratings. Different basic battery designs are also more suited to particular kinds of duty than others. This means that even two batteries that look the same in terms of numeric specifications can easily be far different within.

Many of the larger batteries sold in Australia today, for example, are designed mostly for starting cars and personal trucks. A starter battery that is run down too deeply and then recharged, in fact, will suffer a severely shortened lifetime because of it. On the other hand, there are batteries that are designed to withstand this kind of usage with no issues at all. Often referred to as a “marine battery” or a deep cycle battery, a battery of this sort can be safely tapped of almost all of its power before recharging. While every battery will suffer some shortening of lifetime from recharging, a battery of this kind will hold up to these cycles far more ably than those meant for regular use in personal vehicles will.

Because these two kinds of batteries are so fundamentally different, picking the right one for a given application is important.
